# Transpose lyrics and chords without reprinting charts

Reprinting a chart because the singer needs it a step higher is wasted time. The lyric did not change. Only the **written chords** did.

A lyrics and chord chart app should let you transpose on the same page, set a capo, and walk on. Lyrics Library keeps the words still and moves the harmony marks.

## Write it in the key you learned

Enter the song the way you first grabbed it — maybe G for “we walk the long way home.” That is your **source chart**. Do not keep five copies named “porch light Bb.” One chart, then a live transpose, is easier to trust.

## Transpose for the voice

When the melody sits too high, drop the key until the chorus is comfortable. When it sits too low, raise it. You are not rewriting `G` to `A` by hand on every line. The app moves every mark together so you cannot forget the bridge.

A quick check: sing the highest line of the chorus in the new key. If you can speak that pitch on a tired night, you are close.

## Capo is a guitar decision

Transpose changes what you **read**. Capo changes what the **guitar sounds** while you keep friendlier shapes.

Example: the singer wants sounding A, but you want G shapes. Capo 2, leave the chart in G (or show both, depending on how you like to think). The lyric never moves.

A useful habit:

- **Singer first** — pick the sounding key
- **Hands second** — capo if the shapes get ugly
- **Page last** — hide chords in stage view if you only need the words

## Do this before the count-in

Play the first four bars in the new key. Confirm the opening chord is the one you expect. If you use a [setlist](/blog/build-a-setlist-for-tonight), set transpose per song so the ballad and the closer are not stuck in the same written key.

## What not to do

- Do not keep “v2 capo 3” as a second song in the library unless the lyric actually changed
